What are some house plants that are easy to care for?

I really like the idea of having a green plant in my bedroom, but I know nothing about them. I need something that will be easy to take care of and won't take up much space, I'd like to put it on a small dresser I have and I'd also like to have it in my dorm when I go back to school in the fall.

I live in Central Wisconsin so it would also need to be something I could find locally and that would be able to stand midwestern weather and humidity.

If you have any suggestions for sites or books I'd appreciate those too.

Bamboo super easy just water and stick in sun light.

bambo. it needs little sunlight and little water. i let mine go with out water for a couple of weeks and it was still green and healthy
