the grasslands in mongolia is over grazed and this led to denudation that leads to desert-tification resulting in sandstorm that is now hitting beijing.  so we need to conquer the desert by planting trees etc.  once desert takes over, its tough to win it back. it saps all the water off.  a major project in china / mongolia.

also in many tropical grasslands - u see same problem where man dont know how to live in harmony with nature - not to exploit it but to live with it for the benefit of both
