I'm homeschooling my children for the 2008-2009 school year and I want them to have a fun and exciting experience. My 16 year old is interested in acting so any suggestions would be helpful. I'd like to have a field trip a few times a month if possible with a large one out of state at the end of the school year.

  1. The Lexington Children's Museum has a lot of science-related exhibits and is actually very fun! Some other ideas could be Natural Bridge, the Kentucky Horse Park, and My Old Kentucky Home (Stephen Foster's Home). Fort Harrod has a show they do at night about Daniel Boone (they used to at least). There is a lot of stuff to see there during the day as well. In that same area is Shakertown which is very informative. Hope this helps!

  2. -Lexington Children's Theatre is a professional, non-profit theater company providing quality theater productions for children.

-Studying a foreign country? Lexingtonians love to eat out! Many restaurants use Lex for testing ground. Take them to an authentic restaurant for a taste.

-Need a natural sciences field trip? We have McConnell Springs Nature Center & Raven Run Nature Sanctuary

-Reenact the Olympics. We have city neighborhood pools, olympic pools and family aquatic centers.  Do this one soon, pools are on limited hours and close on 9/1/08.  Also, the Olympic swimming events finish up the end of this week, beginning of next.

-Working on state topics (history, agriculture, economy, etc.)? The Kentucky Horse Park (International Equestrian Games will be here in 2010), horse farms, distillery/farms, and Toyota all offer local tours

-Studying flora and fauna, climate, geology? We have wonderful state parks near by: Cumberland Falls, one of the only 2 places globally you can see a Moonbow, is 90 mi. south; Natural Bridge 52 mi. SE, great place to hike.

-Cincinnati, OH, 80 mi. N, (just across the river from

Newport) zoo, train museum, natural history museum and Eden Park with an art museum, playhouse in the park and Krohn Conservatory (was one of my favorites as a child...go in the spring when they have the lilies on display).

-If you're a reader, you must check out Joseph-Beth Booksellers. Huge selection, kids reading program, and a cafe with an outdoor patio overlooking a pond with ducks (one nested on the patio 2007), geese, and fish. Nice place to lunch on a spring or fall day. Have them find books to do reports on and spend a casual day reading by the lake.
