Question:

What are some ideas for fundraising to raise money for adoption?

Note, both my husband and I have good jobs and make a comfortable living to support a child. However, we don't have an extra $20-$30,000 sitting around to cover adoption expenses!

  1. My friends who adopted set up a checking acount people could anonomously donate to. They also had garage sells, sold stuff on ebay etc... However, the husband is the media pastor at our church and his wife works at a bank. It's understandible that they don't have a lot of money. People were very willing to donate to them. When you do fundraisers, ask for donations, etc... you set yourself up for a lot of financial scrutiny. Before you do any of this, make sure you truly are not financially capable of finding the money yourselves.

My husband and I didn't have $20000 cash either, but like you we have good jobs. Therefore, we didn't feel comfortable trying to do fundraisers etc... We borrowed off our life insurance and plan to pay it back with a work bonus later on. You could probably take out a loan or something like that.

You could also look into foster care. My hsband and I plan to do that the next time we want to adopt. It's free. You can foster infants, toddlers, grown children etc...

Julie R: Are you like a financial expert now? Just because you borrow money doesn't mean you don't have money in savings. Oh and by the way, my husband is insurance and financial specialist (he owns his own business only at the age of 25). We have over a million dollars in life insurance and $12,000 in savings and we are only in our mid twenties. Don't speculate on things you know nothing about. We borrowed from SOME of our life insurance because the interest rate is less than what our savings account interest is. Therefore, it makes more sense to borrow off life insurance and leave our savings in high yield savings account. Especially when you can pay back the life insurance in just a short few months.

It's ridiculous I have to defend my financial decisions on an adoption forum. FREAKIN RIDICULOUS!

Another note Julie R. I'm a happy stay at home mom whose husband takes excellant financial care of me and our son. He already makes 6 figures and by the time he's barely in his 30's, he will probably be making 7 figures. That's just the kind of husband I have. So don't you worry you're sweet little head about my son's financial stability (sarcasm)

  2. Fundraising?  So that means you want someone else to finance your desires?

If I wanted a bigger house, or a new car, I would get a job!  You and your husband have 'good' jobs, but have no extra money?

If you both got PT jobs at $12/hr. X 20 hrs. a wk. = $24,960/yr.  and since you don't have kids, scheduling shouldn't be a problem.  Weekends and evenings.  Anyone can do 2 jobs for a year.

Or you could just adopt a child from foster care that needs a home now...

But to me, expecting others to pay because you want to obtain a child is icky.

Ask yourself--if you can't afford it now, can you afford the child after he/she is in you home?

  3. Adopt from foster care

As an adoptee myself, it makes me very sad to see 'fundraising' by adopters in order to get themselves the child THEY want

Adoption needs to be about providing a home for children in need.  Not about choosing a child YOU want for your family

It's so sad when children who don't suit the adopters wants and needs get passed by in this way.  They deserve a loving home and you can also avoid the unethical practise of making profits on the heads of little babies all in one go.  A win-win as they say!

Please consider foster care adoption.  I am sure it will be just as rewarding, if not more so.

  4. I saw a site about this a few days ago.

You can do a raffel.  You can go around to business and ask for donations into a raffel, and explain with it is for. Then fins a busy store, and make sure you get permission to sell raffel tickets outside. Get peoples names and numbers, and hold the raffel.

Some people set up a small business out of their homes to help pay for this.

Garage sales - people use garage sales to cover travel expenses sometimes.

    Car washes.

Hope this all helps, and I wish you the best of luck in your journey.

  5. Having a fund raiser to buy someone else's child is disgusting.

Why don't you save your money and take a trip to Europe instead?

  6. I dont have any ideas for fundraising..sorry.  I do, however, have some ideas about how to afford the adoption.  There are no interest adoption loans you can apply for, grants, and remember the US govt. allows a 10000 tax CREDIT.  Thjis credit extends over a 5 year period.  For international adoption the child needs to be  a US citizen BEFORE you can file for the credit (so that can take some time for you to see the $$)  DOmestic you can file as you go along in the adoption process.

Good luck and dont let the negative comments discourage you.  We are used to it on this site....  :)

  7. I really don't understand why you wouldn't adopt from the foster system if you don't have the money to do a different kind of adoption.  If you borrow to the hilt to adopt, what are you going to do if you need emergency funds later for the child?  If you borrow against life insurance and then you die, what will happen to the child?

I really don't get it.  Adoption isn't supposed to exist so people can have a son or daughter - it's supposed to exist so a boy or girl can have a stable home.  How is that home stable when the adoptive parents are $20-30k in hock?

    Edit:

I was not speaking to you, "spencer's mom" or "dirtyred" or whoever you are.  I was answering the asker's question.  Y!A isn't about you - it's about the askers, who may very well not be in the same position you are.

  8. * Cookbooks

    * Direct Sale Products - search on www.wahm.com for resources

    * Google "fundraisers" and a plethora of info should come up

    Hope this helps :D

  9. dam your crazy...well it depends how much you need but you could always sell your clothes, ipod watever you have that people would want..get a JOB!! or just ask a best friend to give you some money and tell them you will pay them back asap...good luck and hurry up dont wait to long to get it cause after a certian time you cant get it done anymore...

  10. Our adoption agency had funds that could be used for adoption fees if there was need.  I'm pretty sure it was only for international adoptions as there is not much need in the domestic area.  Call some agencies licensed by your state and ask them if they offer funds.

When we decided to adopt a second child we asked family members for loans to cover the fees and paid them back quarterly.

Good luck and don't give up on your dream of being parents.  It will happen for you.

  11. expect a lot of hateful answers here!!!

When I was presented with the idea of adopting my son the first think I though was how could I possibly pay for it. I wasn't looking to adopt at the time , but God had other ideas. I had all of my investments tied up in my TSP which could only be withdraws under certain conditions, which at that time I didn't qualify for. Some great friends of mine were also looking to adopt and I wanted him to have a home, 'cause the alternative in this situation would have been abortion.

Anyway I called my friend and told her about him and she said that if this was something I had prayed about and sure about then she'd pay for it. AND SHE DID! (at least the legal expences).

So when it's time... pray about it. If it's meant to be, the funding will be there.

Be prepared though, there may be times in this process when you need to just come up with a few thousand dollars. so if you do plan to adopt keep your assets at arms length so you can use them. I though I was making a good move stuffing so much in my TSP without thinking that I might need it.
