  1. There are a few restaurants that claim they are low-sodium, but I would be very careful of what I order.  Look at the sodium content of "low sodium soy sauce" - if my father used that on his food, he'd have to double his Lasex the next three days.  He does like to eat out;  he just has to be very careful about what he orders.  Broiled fish is usually safe;  There is a Japanese restaurant near one of his doctors.  They have salmon teriyaki for lunch (eating that would land him in the hospital).  I order it for him with NO teriyaki, please - just rub oil on top of the fish and sprinkle lots of chopped garlic - it's delicious and safe.  My brother took him to lunch last year - my father spent three weeks in the hospital;  the idiot let him eat the whole basket of bread!  He said, "come on, how much sodium could be in bread"?  A LOT - beside the salt used for flavor, it's used for leavening along with the sodium in yeast and baking powder.

Be very careful of what you eat - don't eat anywhere that uses meat tenderizer - it's very high in sodium, as is MSG.  Tomato sauce and pizza topping can be very, very high.

These people have had good low sodium eating experiences at Angelo's of Mulberry Street and The Brooklyn Diner.

This place has been a family favorite for at least 50 years, and since my father told them about me, we've learned that they can prepare a LOT of meals with very little sodium. I enjoyed chicken marsala last week, and it wasn't only safe, it was DELICIOUS. Their porcini and poppardello dish is amazing, too. I wouldn't say they cut much fat (read: butter) from the dishes, but I'm sure they would if you asked. - Jon Venecom, New Jersey

Had a very good experience at the Brooklyn Diner. It took a while to explain my dietary needs to the server, but she couldn't have been more helpful. Eventually, she brought the chef out to my table to discuss the meal with me personally. They made a terrific grilled salmon with garlic and chopped tomato, with steamed string beans on the side. It was delicious and I ate every bite. It was heaven after many days of no-salt-added canned soup and salads. -- Edith Sachs "

(I would like to see a low sodium section in the supermarket - it would make shopping for my father much easier.  I have found some delicious things that are very low - Stop'n'Shop makes a whole wheat bread that's only 5mg per slice;  Cento and Pami make very low sodium chopped and strained tomatoes - they're really good.  America's Choice makes Swiss cheese that's only 10mg an ounce.)
