Question:

What are some important hurricane supplies when you have a baby?

My brother and sister inlaw aren't too bright. With Tropical Storm Fay possibly being a Hurricane by the time it hits my family my mom is worried they won't be properly prepared. What are some additional supplies one must have on hand for a baby?

Anything special you wouldn't necessarily stock up on for just older kids/adults?

  1. I'd be more concerned about the chronic undiagnosed health problem that is making him need a humidifier all the time.

Well not to make assumptions but I'm assuming they aren't breastfeeding so you would need clean water and formula to last at least 72 hours.  That's 96oz of water, and enough formula (well more or less). You'd either need enough sterilized bottles to last that long OR a way to heat water to sterilize it for boiling bottles PLUS water to boil them in.

You'd need enough diapers, I'm assuming you wouldn't want to be washing diapers.  In a pinch you can use receiving blankets, tea towels, t-shirts, etc as diapers... but then you are looking at cleaning them.

  2. lots of bottled water, plenty baby food if he is eating yet, if possible a generator would be best (a hot plate to warm milk, or microwave)

ultimately they need to evacuate and go somewhere safe

Thick plastic bags to wrap pooped diapers up in.

The ones marketed for diapers are junk. I'd get some garbage bags and use those.

  4. http://www.USAMediaGuide has a special section of links for Fay coverage.  You can get information about the path of the storm, expected rainfall, how to prepare for it and more...all from local news outlets.

  5. bottled water

formula (if not breastfeeding ) a can of powdered formula would be best since the powder dosen't need to be refrigerated  if needed just pour water into bottle add the right amount of powder shake bottle and feed baby.

baby food ( if eating )

a few bottle ( just to make sure) playtex drop ins are good if baby would take them because you would only have to wash the nipple and ring

    a few diapers and wipes

    a few soft yous

    some cloths

    baby blanket

a pacifier ( if baby takes one )

  6. Stock up on:

    formula

    diapers

    wipes

    clean clothes

    blankets

    favorite toys

baby music on hand held cd player for thunderstorms

    binkys

    bottles

    plenty of water

first aid kit for children (www.onestophurricaneshop.net)

    battery operated lanterns/light bulbs/ candles

make sure if you have a generator its not near or inside the house.
