What are some important reasons to study literature?

I'm writing a paper but I can't think of any....

I love literature and you can use any of the things that I'll be writing next:

literature presents us with another perspective on culture, whether we talk about nations (British literature vs scottish literature), race (asian vs western), or time (contemporary or medieval).  literature allows us to see the inner workings of a culture as the written art form often reflects what is actually happening in that culture, that location at that time.  some even consider literature as a form of historical perspective although it coming from a very subjective view.

Consider this; in any other area of study (math, science, business) the one other thing you need to have mastered is reading comprehension and writing.

The best way to improve these skills is through the study of literature.

Aside from that the best way to learn about other cultures as well as history is to read about it.  The single most important invention is the printing press. It changed the world because for the first time in history information could be easily shared with the masses.  All a part of the beauty of literature.

That isn't even considering the joy of escaping into other worlds, times and lives of the greatest books ever written.

Studying literature can make you a more articulate writer, speaker, and thinker. Studying literature can allow you to see things from other points of view. Even just reading literature opens your mind to new things that you may have never even considered before, and if you are studying ancient or historical literature you can see how people's attitudes can change over time.
