Thomas Hobbes

Born in Malmesbury, Wiltshire

Born 1588. Died 1679 - English political philosopher.

Son of country vicar, brought up by an uncle, educated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford. Interest in political theory, in favour of monarchical government. Tutor to exiled Prince of Wales (future Charles 11). Wrote pieces expressing hostility to Church power and religious obedience. Clergy claimed that the Plague and Great Fire of London was God’s wrath for England harbouring such an atheist.
