What are some interesting things about Latin America?

I have to do a project for my Spanish class where I need to focus on a specific Latin American country and then focus in on a specific part of their culture, such as food, music, etc. I wanted to do something different and uncommon, like something that many people don't know about. Any ideas please? I want this to be interesting and fun to research. So it's a country in L.A. and then a topic from that country.... Thanks in advance!

  1. The most unusual and most fascinating thing I have seen in Latin America,( I have only been to 2 countries in Latin America so far),has got to  be the Uros Islands (Islas de Uros) of Peru.

They are man-made islands, made of tortora reeds which grow in abundance on the Lake Titicaca. Half of Lake Titicaca belongs to Peru and the other half to Bolivia. These islands are many layers of those reeds tied together. The people build homes/huts made of those reeds on the islands. They also make traditional boats out of the reeds. These are so unique!

Even the beds in the huts are made of piles of the reeds and covered with a sheet. People on the islands are able to fish. There are fish in this fresh water lake.

You probably can get (and need to) get more details on this subject  from a book, or books, in the Library or from Wikipedia since it's a class project. I am telling you from what I have seen, heard and experienced.

  2. I would like to suggest,

Peru - Inca Culture -  Focus on the ancient city of Macchu Picchu. (New 7 Wonder of the World).

Also Peruvian Food is very rich in variety and flavors. You can bring some dishes to your class so they can taste them. I'm sure you can find a Peruvian restaurant in your city.

Or, show how Spanish words may have different meanings in every country, I had been in different countries in Latam and even for us it may be so funny to find out how different we can express same ideas.

  3. what about the amazing acordeon players in the north part of Colombia. They would blow your mind. Try to find some videos in youtube. Carlos Vives has an awesome acordeon palyer in his band but he's just one of thousands. In fact they have a festival once a year just devoted to crown the King/Queen of acordeon players. It's unreal. even little children play the most amazing pieces. I have never seen anything like that in the entire worls

  4. what about the most ancient rock formation on planet? they are on Venezuela's national park Canaima, besides there´s the highest waterfall of the world; so undiscovered, so beautiful, even if you don´t end up doing your paper on this amazing place, at least you´d know a new thing about your planet
