  5. The Mesopotamian civilization (Sumerian, later Assyrian) was one of the first to develop a written alphabet, using "cuneiform" (wedge-shaped) letters pressed into clay tablets that were then baked. They were apparently good accountants and kept inventory of stock and sales.

    Mesopotamia developed one of the first codes of law (Hammurabi's code) and was one of the sources of the Flood story recounted in Genesis.

    Mesopotamia also had a supreme god and lawgiver, Marduk, who was a forerunner of the Old Testament Yahweh.
