What are some jobs at embassies/consulates?

ive always liked working with people and internationally and i was wondering what are the kind of jobs available at embassies/consulates? also, what kind of university programs would someone interested in working there need to get? (i live in Canada right now but speak other languages than English as well).

A degree in Foreign Service or Diplomatic & Consular Affairs (DCA) usually prioritizes your CV over other applicants.

If you want to work in positions other than as a diplomat of your own country, you can approach an embassy/consulate to inquire about vacancies. Secretarial positions are usually filled by socalled "locally hired" employees. Passport processors, security, driver, gardener and such administrative positions may also be filled by a local hire.

To work in an embassy, you would ordinarily either be hired directly by your government and sent overseas, or have your own residence/work visas in place, and seek employment as a local hire, generally for administrative positions.

Trade Commissioners build international alliances and networks essential to Canada's international commerce and economic prosperity; help shape Canadian trade policy; promote foreign investment in and out of Canada; and help guide Canadians to international commercial success.

Foreign services Immigration Officers are the human face of complex immigration policies with a worldwide clientele.

Political/Economic Officers promote Canada's interests bilaterally and multilaterally on wide-ranging issues including international human rights, environmental concerns, disarmament, crisis management and peace-building.

Management and consular affairs officers are involved in the corporate management of a dynamic and ever-changing organization with a network of 170 missions in 153 countries and more than 8,500 employees. They are also responsible for managing the consular program which provides a wide range of assistance to Canadians overseas.
