  1. Geologically, the Yucatan Peninsula is fascinating. There are the most incredible underground river systems and cenotes, many of which have yet to be discovered and connected.

Cenotes were formed millions of years ago when the oceans receded and a limestone plateau was formed that now covers the Yucatán Peninsula. Rainwaters filtered down through the porous rock into the substructure, creating underground rivers. After the last Ice Age, the oceans rose to their current levels and flooded the caves. As parts of the limestone plateau collapsed, sinkholes (cenotes) were created. The term “cenote” (pronounced “se-noh-tay”) comes from the Mayan word “dzonot” meaning “a hole filled with water” or “abysmal and deep”. Cenotes were revered as sacred by the ancient Maya and believed to be entrances to the underworld, as well as being an important source of fresh water.

The most incredible cenotes I've seen are those at Hidden Worlds Cenotes Park, located about 2 kms south of Xel-Ha in the Riviera Maya. The cenotes there have the most beautifully intricate stalagmites and stalactites... utterly breathtaking to behold! And they seem to really care about preserving them there too, which sadly can't be said about many tourist places along the peninsula.

  2. Caribbean sea

coral reef...second largest in the world

Hotel Zone is an island connected by bridges

many islands close by (isla mujeres, isla contoy, cozumel)

The whole Yucatan peninsula is almost totally flat...some small bumps (too small to call hills)...no above ground rivers or lakes (loads of cenotes...sinkholes)...ground is sandstone.

    Hope this answers your question!
