  1. Wow, the first thing that comes to mind is story book day.  Each day ask a child to bring their favourite book from home to share at the next session. You can read the childs book at classtime and all the children can discuss what happened in the book.  This gives each child a turn at feeling really important and special as their favourite book is shared by everyone.  Does this help ???

  2. Literature with books?  Or Literacy?

For literacy- here's a book to check into

Jump into Literacy: Active Learning for Preschool Children by Rae Pica

Literature- There are a great many books out there that we can "extend" in so many ways.  Brown Bear Brown Bear, Iza Trapani books, We're Going on a Bear Hunt, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Mouse Paint, Little Red Hen, In the Tall Tall Grass, It Looked Like Spilt Milk, The Three Pigs, so on.  If you are interested in a specific theme or book you can email me and I'll see what I can do for you with specifics.  Once you get a little experience it will come easier for you :-)  You'll get to a point where you can create a lesson plan for any book you set your hands on.  :-)

  3. you sure ask a lot of questions about what to do with 2-4 yr olds.  are you new to child care?

  4. My favorite literature activities were ones where we read a book then did an activity related to it.

For example: Read "The Doorbell Rang" and then bake cookies.  Read "If You Give a Moose a Muffin" and bake muffins.  Read "Three Billy Goats Gruff" and act out the story. (The used a table and chairs for the bridge and made costumes out of stuff in the art area.) We could do a whole week's worth of activities based on a story. These are called "story stretchers", "story extenders," or "literature extension activities" and there are resource books and websites full of ideas.

Your local library may have Story S-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-r-s: Activities to Expand Children's Favorite Books by Shirley Raines. That's a book I used a lot!

  5. Dr.Seuss books, Baby Genius books, you can connect with their website:www.babygenius.com  and get books,DVDS,Miusic,Toys to teach with, some of the titles are:colors, counting, shapes, baby animals, favorite dance party, favorite children songs, favorite sing-a-longs,undrwater adventures,no more monkeys( you can download this and other songs for free)favorite nursery rhyms; these books are6"x6" just big enough  for little hands to hold, I worked at a Taco Bell, and when my young customers came in with an adult, I gave these to them to 1. make them feel special,2. to teach them. flash cards are always good,w/ABC's or NUMBERS. Hope this helps you.I was very proud of our books at Taco Bell, because they teach children about all things, and I still am proud of the books at Taco Bell, you may get these books through the website,or go to any Taco Bell and ask for a under toy, and especially ask for the Baby Genius books, every Taco Bell has them.

  6. Read them a short story and ask them to draw a picture of their favorite scene. Something to do with art.

Like, if its a good vs bad guys story, and (of course) the good guy wins, have them write a giant 'Congratulations' card on a large sheet of butcher paper. Let them finger-paint and put stickers on it.

    Maybe let them re-enact a scene? I don't know, that's all I got.

  7. There are many books that you can use, modify, and create language lessons out of.

My fave language lessons are from the following books: The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Froggy Gets Dressed, The Big Wide-Mouthed Frog, Rumble in the Jungle, and Anansi.

I would give you specifics, but I don't know if you have any of those books. If you do, contact me, and I can give you ideas regarding language, arts and craft, and food activities for the books. :)
