My sister and I are staying in Negril the second week of January, and we've rented a car. Although we've never been to Jamaica before we've traveled a lot and don't really want to get caught in the tourist traps. It's my 30th birthday and we'd really like to make this a memorable trip. Can anyone recommend any off the beaten path or adventurous or "do not miss!!" Jamaican activities?

  1. I just spent time in Jamaica with my man and his family, one of  the most memorable days was when my boyfriend went shooting fish in the sea and then we sat on some isolated rocks and he cooked them as soon as he came back to the rocks and we ate them as the sun went down.

  2. Went on a catamaran & did snorkeling & then climbed the Dunn's river falls. It was a great sight seeing event & wasn't too expensive. I would recomed it to anyone!

  3. well, i live in Jamaica and its a pretty nice place to live.  one of the most low cost less touristy adventurous things to do is party in Kingston, the capital just 2 and a half hours away or 1 and a half hours if u take highway 2000.  tourists never go there so no one will suspect anything and there are lots of  parties there which are hype and cheap. just be careful not to get mixed up in any trouble (metro Kingston can be a dangerous place after night especially in downtown).

  4. 1. That boat trip idea is hot. The rates for a half day fishing trip are fairly standard. I can put you on to some people who own lots of luxury/fishing boats if you like! There is so much fun among friends fishing and snorkeling, etc.

1b. There is a restuarant/bar somewhere in the middle of the sea off the south coast. Its a few miles from land. I've only seen fabulous pictures of it. You and your friends will want to take some of these pictures yourselves! 360 degrees of sea and a bar (big enough to hold a small party) smack in the middle.

    2. There is also chukka adventure tours. They have tons of tours that are reasonably priced.

    3. You MUST go to an authentic roots/cultural reggae concert. 'Rebel Salute' is held somewhere about the time that you will be here. The music will be soulful, the food will be exceptional (mostly vegatarian) and there is no alcohol served at that show. I would suggest parking the rent-a-car and, instead, charter a minivan (with a driver) for you and your friends for the evening trip. You will be coming home in the later hours of the morning, perhaps near sunrise. Its more fun when you dont have to worry about driving tired or making a wrong turn. The driver will know places you can stop for authentic food as well.

If you are thinking of going to clubs/parties in Kingston, try to get someone you trust (who knows kingston) to go with you. This will help with the 4-hour drive. Its 4 hours each way. Also have a clear plan of so sorts. Some clubs are only open 4 nights a week and you wouldnt want to drive to kingsotn and find the club closed. Try going to "Bembe Thursdays" (starts at 10pm and finishes at 2am) then check out Asylum Nightclub afterwards.

On Wednesday Nights in Kingston the hotspots are Quad Nightclub (US$10), Weddy Weddy (FREE) and Passa Passa (FREE). Passa Passa is an intense Reggae Dancehall experience, but you MUST travel with someone who knows downtown kingston. The event is safe, but you really dont want to get lost getting there or heading home. Quad and Weddy are 'uptown'.

If you have to choose ONE of these musical events. I would say head to Rebel Salute.

    EDIT:

    4. The "Courtyard" at market place in Kingston - Its  basically an exquisite Restuarant village, where ur friends can all sit around one table and eat from about 8 different resturants with cuisine from around the world (Japan, China, Middle East). Most of the restuarants are VERY authentic in taste.  The courtyard is a popular place for the big 3-0 celebration.
