  1. There have been many large companies that have filed for bankruptcy just since the beginning of the decade:

    The 2 biggest were the victims of fraud; WorldCom, Inc. and Enron Corp.

    Most of the major airlines have been in and out of bankruptcy, some more than once. Those that have survived (for now) are UAL (United Airlines), Delta, Northwest, and US Airways. Continental Airlines has been through bankruptcy court more than once, although not yet this decade.

    Other major companies that filed were:

    Conseco, Inc.  (Insurance)

    Pacific Gas & Electric (Utility)

    Calpine Corp. (Utility)

    Global Crossing, Ltd. (Telecom)

    Adelphia Communications Corp. (Cable TV)
