What are some major tips for traveling to Guatemala?

I am going in August, and i've heard great things, and very bad things about the crime there. I just want to avoid any complicantions while I'm there as much as possible!

I've been down a few times and the rules are simple. Do not travel at night and try to not be alone. Do not try to draw attention to yourself. Be a traveller and not a tourist.

Other than that you should be fine.

If in the City, saee what you want to see and then go to the smaller cities and enjoy yourself. Antigua is beautiful and safe. The Atitlan lake region is great and very laid back. Panajachel is wonderful.  If you have time go to Flores and Tikal. The ruins are amazing and will take your breath away.
