  1. I do not like Cadiz.

    It has one redeeming feature. The road north.

    It is so grotty that it was used as Havana, Cuba in a James Bond film.

    I note that even its supporters suggest that you go elsewhere!

    The Cathedral is of no great artistic importance; The beaches are polluted; there is no old part as there is in many Spanish cities; ( this is because some idiot blew the town up about 100 years ago!  Really!! It was one of the world's biggest bangs.);

    There are some good restaurants.

    The local accent is seen as very low class be other Spaniards.

    On the positive side, there is a fantastic carnival. The carnival choirs are famous. they dress up in silly costumes and sing comic songs. The down side is that because of the local accent, the songs can only be understood by locals.

    The city is awash with drugs And junkies.

    The ferry trip to El Puerto de Santa Maria is worth doing, but that is leavuing the city.

    There is no bull ring.

    There is a museum, which considering the city's rich history, has very little of interest.

    You can walk around the remains of the city walls. The views are great but what you are seeing is not in the city...is it?

    Cadiz lives on its being the Provincial capital and a major port with a ferry to the Canary Islands. There is also a military presence.

    There is a shopping mall with a multi-cine to the north of the city but it is no better than the mall in El Puerto de Sta. Maria.

    Manuel de Falla, the composer was born in Cadiz but his birth place only has a small identifying sign. The locals prefer listening to dead junkies like Cameron de la Isla.

  2. Cadiz is a delightful city, but not necessarily full of must see attractions - go to the Cathedral to take the views from the tower next to it.  Walk on the sea walls.  Stroll through the old town, have a great lunch.  If you have time, hire a car and go to Jerez or Sanlucar or any of the hilltop towns, or to Tarifa or if a history buff, Trafalgar - not a lot there other than a great beach and a lighthouse and a sense of history, but explanations around the circuit about the battle which saw Nelson truimph at the cost of his life.  It's a fab area of Spain to go, and not too touristy.  You can also strike out easily to Seville from there, which really should NOT be missed!

  3. The old city looks quite Moorish in appearance and is intriguing with narrow cobbled streets opening onto small squares. You pass through some lovely parks with wonderful views of the bay.

    It has around three thousand years of history, it is the oldest city of Europe, where Fenicians, Carthagenes, and of course Romans have had their settlements.
