  1. It depends on the individual and the symptoms. I take zoloft -an antidepressant, and geodon -a mood stabilizer that also helps with voices.

  2. That would depend on the symptoms. If its depression, or psychotic symptoms.

  3. I was given Cipralex (Escitalopram) to try first.  I had already been suffering with PTSD for 2 years before asking for medical help.  Was trying to get through it with trauma counselling first.  This didn't help at all so I am now taking Amitriptylene which helps me sleep, but doesn't help at all with the daytime anxiety and depression I have caused by flashbacks and just trying to survive each day.

I am interested to see some of the other meds which are used.

    :-)))

  4. i take valium for it. i tried all those new ones out there and they did not work. i told my doc that i needed something that had been around for years and that is what he gave me. it is only 5 milligrams and i take two a day. i know they are addictive but they help me.

  5. Paxil is what I see as the most commonly prescribed med for PTSD.  It is an SSRI antidepressant.  Also Buspar is used or vistaril, I prefer buspar.  Anti-anxiety meds are used too, like ativan or xanex.

Valium is another benzo like ativan and xanex.  Amitriptyline is Elavil a tricyclic antidepressant, this is my choice for a TCA.  Cipralex I didn't recognize and had to look up, it came out after I finished school and everybody calls it by its other name,  I am familiar with its other name Lexapro which is another SSRI this is used alot.  I like all the SSRI's

Another benzo,  anti-anxiety, long acting is klonopin

other SSRI's prozac, zoloft, celexa, luvox

SNRI's selective neurepinephrine reuptake inhibitors these are also used for PTSD like Effexor and Serzone.  I prefer Effexor

other trycyclics TCA's anafranil, sinequan, tofranil, pamelor

and NaSSA's noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant like remeron.  I don't like the propensity for weight gain with this one.  It does help with insomnia though
