Or any book/ movie that revolves around the theme of writing?

For my college essay I need to write about a fictional character that I can relate to, and I've always loved English and writing.

THANKS! =)

  1. On the Road by Jack Kerouac would be perfect.

  2. My first thought was Little Women.  Classic, of course.

Also, I think anything by John Irving, but certainly Garp and Hotel New Hampshire.  I never read the later ones, and can't even remember if I've read his earlier stuff, but those two were pretty memorable.

  3. Movie: Finding Forrester.  Was recommended to me by an english teacher and I loved it.

  4. coyote ugly is about an aspiring song writer

music and lyrics - about a song writing duo

  5. A lot of books by Stephen King.

The movie Finding Forrester with Sean Connery

  6. "The Storyteller:  A  Novel" by Arthur Reid

    http://www.amazon.com/Storyteller-Novel-...

"Bartender Steven Konigsberg always wanted to be a novelist, but has never had much success getting published. When he inherits all the possessions of a recently deceased mentor, he finds two trunkfuls of excellent but never-published stories. Unable to resist the temptation, Konigsberg begins publishing them under his own name, and he finally achieves the prestige and recognition he always hoped for. Naturally, one lie leads to another, and, soon enough, Konigsberg finds himself confronted by acquaintances of his former mentor who threaten to expose the famous and popular “author” as a fraud. Reid likens the premise to a Faustian bargain, but present-day readers may find The Storyteller more interesting and engaging than its predecessors in that genre. In addition to the novel’s more complicated plot, Konigsberg is much more likable than his analogues, perhaps because of the lack of overly dramatic self-pity. Readers will feel his dilemma and be quickly drawn in. The novel is surprisingly engrossing and is well worth the few hours it will take to read."

  10. Her Alibi

  11. Misery

    The Shining

    Bag of Bones

    (all Stephen King)

    Mr Murder by Dean Koontz

Almost Famous (he's writing for Rolling Stone, or trying to!).

Lead Balloon (UK comedy series - he's a comedy writer)

Romancing the Stone - Kathleen Turner's a romantic novelist who ends up starring in her own story!

  12. Jo in Little Women :)

  13. Misery, Secret Window

  14. Some of the classics:

    Little Woman

Book: Little Woman: Main Character Jo, is an aspiring writer who starts out by writing 'meaningless' thriller short stories which are published for 5$ dollars in newspapers. Jo eventually publishes the story of her family. Movies: Little Woman (1994) and the Katherine Hepburn.

    Pride and Prejudice:

Book: Main Character, Lizzie Bennet, it's hinted that Lizzie likes literature.  Keira Knightley.

    The Outsiders

Main Character: Ponyboy. The story of the 1970's gang fights is used as Ponyboy's english paper theme. The book is Ponyboy's english paper. Hinted: He likes to read. There's a Patrick Swayze version of the film.

    The Devil Wears Prada

Main character Andrea Sachs comes to New York to become a famous journalist. (Film with Anne Hathaway)

    Princess Diaries:

Through the last books Mia Thermopolis develops a sense of 'my talent in life is to be a writer'. There's no such thing in the films though.

    TV:

You've Got Mail (1998 Meg Ryan): There's no one trying to be a writer. The story revolves around 2 businessmen in the book business, who try to put each other out of business. But as pen-pals, fall in love. Theme: pen-pals, books.

If you're trying to relate here, though, you might need to relate to Kathleen Kelly's love for books, and for her roommate being a journalist.

Gilmore Girls: Rory is in Yale studying writing. (Alexis Bledel)

    Also:

Look through Winona Ryder movies. She likes to play a writer.

    For example:

    Little Woman: Jo March.

Mr. Dean: Plays evil journalist who tries to publicly ashame the main character, but ends up falling in love.
