  2. I was going to answer, but then I looked at your username...

  3. The Mummy...there was an egyptian Pharaoh named Imotep and the story is similar to the one in the movie.

  4. Gone with the Wind

    Titanic

    Pride of the Yankees

    Gladiator

  5. There are a wealth of movies about different events from history; naming some simply depends on what period of history you may be interested in.

300 is about Roman history; Schindler's List has to do with the n**i's of WWII; Platoon and We Were Soldiers are about the Vietnam war; Glory is about one of the African American units of the Civil War. The list could go on and on. There are plenty of good films out there that contain historic content.

  6. OK, I have to correct someone else here.  "300" is not about Roman history.  It is Greek history.  It is when the Spartans, together with about 7000 other Greeks, succeeded in temporarily halting the advance of Xerxes' Persian army.

About the movie "300" itself being a history film, give me a break!  You've got guys like that executioner monster with the metal blade for an arm, and people call it a history film??  Maybe its a good comic book movie, but it is not a history film.

Want a good history film on the battle of Thermopylae (the battle in question)?  Rent the movie "The 300 Spartans".  Sure, it's real old (a '60s classic), but exceptional in its acting and no comic book nonsense.

I am a history teacher.  What saddens me the most isn't the fact that some people consider "300" a history film, its the fact that out there are undoubtedly some teachers who have peddled this c**p as history in their classrooms.

  7. Even some films that are not necessarily historical maay contain historical information such as how people lived during the times.  Spartacus and The Ten Commandments come to mind.

  8. What's going for history in movies is that an enormous amount of research is done into the customs, architecture, costuming and political structure of the time in which the "period piece" is set. What goes against it is the necessity to focus upon a few individuals - because that is the nature of drama - at the expense of the larger scenario.

Off the top of my head, I would suggest:

    Becket

    A man for all seasons

    A lion in Winter

All quiet on the Western Front

    Saving Private Ryan

    The longest day

    A bridge too far

    Bridge on the River Kwai

    Dangerous Moonlight (Warsaw Concerto)

    Dangerous Liaisons

    A tale of two cities

    Gone with the wind

    Viva Zapata

    The Alamo

    High Noon

Any of Dicken's filmed works re Victoriana - A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, etc..

    Quo Vadis

    The Robe

    Ben Hur

    Cleopatra

    Colonel Blimp

    Clive of India

    Gungadin

    Zulu

    The Seven Samurai

    Apocalypto.
