My ankles are always swollen by the end of the day. It's very uncomfortable and embarassing. I asked my doctor about it and she checked me for all kinds of heart problems that can lead to edema. Luckily I'm healthy as a horse! She prescribed me some mild water pills which do help but I would rather not take them if there are other things I can do to help. Any ideas??

  1. I was cooking with coconut oil after using it as a medicine. I took way too much. The ankles swelled from cholesterol my guess. I stopped using it and use olive oil only. Swimming helps them go down but I need to keep them up often now.

  2. you can elevate them at night prop them up on a few pillows, also ice helps with swelling, so apply ice a few times a day for twenty minutes each time...and drink more water...i know it sounds weird to drink fluid when you are retaining fluid but this is what you need to help flush your body of the excess fluid...i hope this helps:)

  3. Always wear comfortable footwear.

  4. Omega 3 will be a great supplement for you.

Swim for at least 30mins aday, that will help you to ease the pain.

Glucosamine will be another supplement that you can consider.

Rub some ointment on your ankles befoe you go to bed. Put on a socks when sleeping to protect your ankles.

  5. You can try what's called a manual lymph drainage massage. Some massage therapists are trained how to do this. We manually pump the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is responsible for draining all the extra fluids in the body. By manually pumping it, it's helps the flow to move faster. I'm not saying it will solve your problem, but it might be worth a try. Good luck and best wishes!

  6. keep your feet elevated and drink some dandelion tea. stay away from the salt.

  7. I like the idea of the legs up the wall from yoga. Elevating your legs above your heart is the goal. This will allow tissue fluid an easier return to the heart and relieve the edema. you can also try wearing compression stockings.

  8. I'm glad you've already checked with you doctor. I have this same problem, usually hormone driven. I find that severely limiting salt for a few days helps. Check every label. Salt hides in everything these days. Also, believe it or not, increasing your water intake forces your kidneys to work more. Consequently,  you'll urinate more. That helps to get the fluid moving. Light exercise stimulates the lymphatic system and gets fluid moving too. I hate to exercise, but sometimes a brisk walk and a bottle of water really help. If all else fails, take the medicine.
