What are some negative effects from not keeping doors closed when running a home A/C unit?

It causes the a/c to run harder to circulate the cooler air, putting a stess on the cooling sytem.  Another possibility is causing a fuse to blow or burn out the motor resulting in service repair costs.  And an increase in utility costs.

Aside from just the wasted energy and money, letting humid outdoor air in really overloads the system and will cause it to fail prematurely.   It takes more energy to remove the humidity from the air than just the heat.  This is one reason why it is better to leave your ac on all the time rather than shutting it down when you leave for work.  (You can put the thermostat up, just don't shut it down).

Besides the obvious power usage increase, the real problem is that the condenser will work continuously to remove the humidity in the outside air.  That continuous operation will greatly reduce the life of the unit.  They aren't meant to work like that.
