I will need a new car in about a year or two.

I want my next car to be one of the newest or best environmentally friendly compact 4-door cars that will be decently affordable. What companies are currently working on new hybrids or other new technologies that should be finished in the near future? What features should I be shopping for?

  1. The Saturn Vue Plug in should also be out within the next year or so. There will also be a FWD 2 mode hybrid system from GM... but that will probably be somewhat expensive. Around the price of the Camry Hybrid.

  2. Well in 2009 there should be 2 very good electric vehicles available for about $30,000.  The ZAP Alias and Miles Javlon will have top speeds of about 80-100 mph and ranges of about 100-120 miles per charge.

The Chevy Volt is scheduled for release in late 2010.  It will act as an electric car for the first 40 miles, then an electric/gas hybrid after that.  It should also cost around $30,000.

Toyota is also working on a plug-in version of the Prius which may come out in 2010, but I think that might be a bit optimistic.

So for the next 2 years or so, the Prius will remain the most environmentally friendly car.  After that there will be a number of very good options.

  5. Look into "Plug-In Hybrid" cars, they allow you to recharge the car in your garage and travel about 80 miles between charges, but the distance increases all the time. In a year they will travel over 150 miles. Soon shopping centers will have plugs to attract customers. The energy cost is less than a dollar. They are made by Honda, Toyota,.Ford and GM, I think. Their batteries are expensive, similar to those in laptops.

  6. The features that you should be looking for is:

    1. Battery life: How long?

The battery of phoenix all-electric car for example, last up to 12 years.

    3.  What is the range for single refill or recharge?

In the near future you will see less fossil fuel cars, and more and more electric cars, because it is the most feasible among the choices.
