  1. DO's (doctor of osteopathic medicine) are physicians who can treat patients, specialize, prescribe. They are equivalent to MD's but take additional training in osteopathic manipulative medicine. Some DO's even match into MD residencies.

Other medical professionals: nurse practitioners, physician assistants. Both an NP or a PA can act independently or under the supervision of a MD/DO depending on the state. There are ways to specialize as NP's or PA's as well.

There are also many allied health fields. Nurses. Radiological techs. Physical Therapists (which I believe now require a doctorate degree for entry into the career, so they are doctors as well, just not physicians) to name just a few.

  2. pharmacy requires PharmD or Doctorate of pharmacy as well as Dentists or optometrists, etc. All require specialized graduate school training beyond the normal grad school requirements. There are many options available.

  3. OD - doctor of optometry

    DDS or DMD - dentist

    DO - doctor of osteopathy

PsyD and some PhDs - psychologists with a doctorate degree

    DPM - podiatrist

Many pharmacists and more and more speech pathologists have doctorate degrees.

All of the above are commonly referred to as doctors.

DC - chiropractor. Although no longer designated as a "spurious" degree, the DC degree is conferred only by schools of chiropractic, none of which are affiliated with an academic institution such as Harvard, Yale, Duke, etc.
