  1. An Amniocentesis (checking the amniotic fluid) tests for chromosone abnormalities.

An ultrasound checks for sizing problems and abnomal growths/lack of growth. It also checks the internal organs are formed ok.

  2. Ultrasound looks for structural birth defects (club foot, cleft lip, etc) as well as soft markers associated with conditions like Down syndrome.  It also is used to monitor growth and organ formation.

Amniocentesis allows for analysis of fetal chromosomes as well as open neural tube defects such as spina bifida by measuring AFP/ACHE levels in the fluid.

  3. Many physical abnormalities can be seen.  Cleft lip/palate, club foot, heart defects, problems with kidneys and the bladder.  Anything unusual with the size and structure of the body can be seen, like large or small head, body, etc.

Testing via amniotic fluid will yield DNA results.  So you'll find out if your baby has any of the common trisomies or other chromosomal abnormalities.

  4. they look at all the organs, the spine and libs to make sure they are normal.
