  4. CHESS TACTICS FOR CHAMPIONS - Susan Polgar

This book ($17 at Barnes & Noble) has done more to improve my game than any other book!  I have a lot of chess books, but this one above all others is the one I'd recommend most of all because it's fun!  People that I play regularly told me my game improved drastically when I got this book...and I had only read the first 10 or so pages at the time!  A co-worker had beaten me 10 games in a row so I stopped playing him.  After I read the first part of this book I played him again and he stopped playing me after I had beaten him viciously 3 games in a row! He actually became embarrassed to play me any further! Susan does a great job of showing how to create forks, double attacks, pins, skewers and much more.  You will never look at a chessboard the same after reading this book.  Truly excellent!

    BEGINNING CHESS - Bruce Pandolfini

I like this book because, like the Polgar book above it is very easy to follow.  This has a unique quality.  It's more like a chess workbook.  In it, Bruce Pandofini gives you chess positions and you establish what the best moves are for that particular position.  You are scored on your performance and that is what I really like about this book.  Once you finish the book you can go through it again and watch your score improve.  That's a nice tangible way to establish whether or not you are truly applying what you've learned.  And like I said about Susan Polgar's book before, you will never look at a chessboard the same after working through this book.

My favorite chess book for a long time was BOBBY FISCHER TEACHES CHESS (Barnes & Noble) but that changed after I got BEGINNING CHESS.  BEGINNING CHESS I feel is a much better system for improving your game.  ...and then I found Polgar's book!

BONUS SECTION: Must see chess movies

    SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER

A superb account of the true life story of how seven year old Josh Waitzkin  became a master class champion.  The acting is great with Joe Montegna, Ben Kingsley, Max Pomerac, and Laurence Fishburne.  Even for people who have no interest in chess this is a terrific family film focusing more on relationships and integrity than playing chess.

    KNIGHTS OF THE SOUTH BRONX

Another true story.  Well acted.  Ted Danson (who I normally hate) does a nice job in this one as a teacher who uses chess as a tool to bring disadvantaged students to a sense of self-worth.  Inspirational.

    CHESS KIDS

A wonderful documentary of young children competing in the national chess championship.  The kids are innocent, loveable, and a joy to watch as they demonstrate their keen abilities on the chessboard.  In this documentary you will even catch glimpses of a young Josh Watzkin and Susan Polgar playing a blitz game.  Josh walks away embarrassed having been slightly distracted by the cute Polgar and losing his game.  My favorite scene is when one child is watching her coaches argue over what she should do next to win her game and then she politely interrupts showing them what she thinks she should do...their jaws drop after seeing that she had a much better idea!

Did I tell you I love chess????

Anyway, good luck!  I hope this was helpful.

  5. It really depends what kind of chess book; beginner, intermediate, or expert chess books. Some of the best intermediate books are How To Beat Your Dad At Chess, Chess Strategy, and Winning Chess Openings. A lot of chess books are at Barnes & Noble and Borders.
