I was wondering about how many you need to have on duty at a pool at a time, where they need to be stationed, and how many times they are supposed to have breaks.

  1. It really depends on the type of training, the insurance agency and the facility.  Usually its how many blind spots are located at a pool (corners, deep end and lightly used areas), number of guards on (one, to twelve) and the agency's regulations. The YMCA says one guard, with a 30 minute break every 4 hours in hot weather (6 in cold) or Ellis where usual rotation includes many guards with a ration of 30 min up, 15 on rove (break, but still liable to respond to emergencies)
