Nobody mentioned the Maya ruins other than Tikal:

And you can cross the border into Honduras and see the ruins at Copan--a short drive from the border.

Antigua Guatemala is close to the capital is an old town with old Spanish houses style and beautiful view of volcano's and the weather is like spring all year round.

Panajachel is a lake in west of the country, this lake is also around volcano's on the Altiplano (mountains).

Tikal is on the north side on the jungle in here you'll find pyramid es of the ancient Mayas to get there is easier by air plane.

The biggest tourist areas are Antigua, Panajachel, Chichicastenego, Tikal, and Rio Dulce.

Around Antigua you can go to Volcano Pecaya and Volcano

Then there is also Guatemala City which has the Palace, The cathederal, the market, the giant relief map, and several museums.

Tikal for sure....... Lago Atitlan with the surrounding communities (be careful in Panjachel), Livingston, Tulate, Quetzaltenango (fabulous spanish schools), Nueva Alianza (coffee Finca)

By far, the most interesting place to visit is Tikal.  The splendor and mystique is second to none.  As far as nice places to visit, I would list Semuc Champey as number 2 on the list of things to do.  Most people don't make it out there because it is a long trek, but it is well worth the  trip.  If you are looking for something closer to the city, Antigua and Panajachel (Lake Atitlan) are the places to go.  Rio Dulce is beautiful and so is Monterrico, but make sure you bring plenty, and I mean PLENTY, of insect repellant.  Map out your trip and have fun.  Use common sense and you safety shouldn't be a problem.  Travel after dark becomes dangerous, but it is still possible.
