  3. Look at Mother Teresa, she was a very sick child. Doctors told her parents she would not live to be 13. She dedicated her life to the poor and lived a long long life. She gave up her life to save it

  4. My close friend Jacqui lost her leg after a dumb teenager drove his car into her motorcycle.  Well, at first she lost her foot and they spent four years trying to 'grow' her smashed thighbone with expensive and painful external scaffolding, then, having grown the thigh, her knee had seized and they had to amputate the whole leg. The driver and his mates showed no sorrow or contrition and admitted no wrongdoing, he lost his licence for six months.

Jacqui spent years trying to get out and have fun, but often had to spend days and nights sitting next to a bar heater (warmth helped the pain), rocking back and forth with her usually active and creative mind blurred by painkillers.

Jax never whinged and barely complained about her situation, but she was angry at the guy who hit her and his behaviour. She was always trying to do as much as she could and push herself: reading, writing, playing music. She props her stump up and puts sunglasses on it, playing with it like a puppet.

She is my real-life tough guy hero.

  6. My pick would be Hugh Glass an American Trapper and "Mountain Man" who was mauled by a grizzly bear, left to die by his companions, survived and crawled/walked 300 miles to civilization.

  7. Ghandi.
