When European nations colonized Africa (and the Middle East), boundary lines were set with little regard for the territory of various ethnic groups lived; when the colonial era ended, these boundaries generally stayed in place.  As a result, many ethnic groups are split between two countries, and many countries are an uneasy mix of different ethnic groups, most of whom feel greater loyalty to their ethnic group than to their country and many of whom are actively hostile toward other ethnic groups. As a result, various ethnic groups within countries are constantly trying to gain the upper hand on the other ethnic groups in the same country.  The problem is compounded by the fact that ethnic groups whose traditional territory crosses country boundaries generally have no respect for those boundaries, meaning conflict in one country can easily spill over into adjacent countries.
