What are some of the scariest legendary/mythical creatures or tales you can think of?

Black Dogs

Banshees

Stories are just as fine as creatures.

Actually?  Angels.

Not the chubby cherub kind, or the hippie "guardian" kind, the older, Biblical kind. Didn't you ever notice how whever God wants to make an example of someone or somewhere, he sends an Angel?  Angels frag entire countries.  An Angel kills all the firstborn children of Egypt.  Can you imagine what a creature, supposedly of LIGHT and GOOD that has no difficulty at all slaughtering a few hundred thousand human children has to really be like?

That's kind of scary.

How about a creature that has been sighted in real life? I think the stories about the dogmen (mandogs, manwolves) are some of the spookiest. This site covers a lot about them:
