In former times the acorns provided a carbohydrate-rich food for humans, pigs, and wild game.

    Medicinal Uses ( inner bark contains 6 - 11% tannin ):

antiseptic, astringent, expectorant, asthma , tonic.

Externally, it is used as a wash for skin eruptions, burns, rashes, bruises, ulcers etc

Galls produced on the tree are strongly astringent and can be used in the treatment of haemorrhages, chronic diarrhoea, dysentery etc

  2. Used to be beer, wine, and whiskey barrels.  Probably now just wine and whiskey barrels.  White oaks have tyloses in their vessel elements, thus making the wood water tight.
