I want to know what are some of the things you think we, humans, can do to stop the extinction and endangerment of animals and what you think about it.

I think since we are the ones lowering the animals numbers day in and day out we could bring them up.

but what do you think about this?

  1. Yeah, overpopulation is a HUGE problem, We are choking out the animals, consuming too much, destroying too much. I know this will cause backlash, but i really do think we need some regulations. This planet is here for us to share with all the other animals, but we treat it like its ours to use up. Humans are like rockers and the earth is our hotel room, we just trash it without remorse.

  2. Millions and millions of Sea lions on the west coast are on the endangered species list. So why should I believe any animals deserves to be on the endangered species list.

  3. i think preserving certain animal species is very important. i dont think things can be done with other species, just becase of the greediness of the human nature. like the african elephant, being poached for the ivory of its tusks. we can, however, do whatever is in our power to help, and fight.

    there ya go, jess!

  4. I think that one of the biggest problems I have is when my government tells me I HAVE TO change my lifestyle or stop doing various things, can't build in certain locations, etc because of the potential that it may impact various species...

  5. I think we have to be aware first of the damage that we are causing.  I agree that a lot of species are doomed from having specialized habits etc but there are species out there that we are causing the demise of.  Illegal  poaching of endangered species, happening on all continents by a lot of different groups/people is happening every day.  The illegal bushmeat trade of killing chimpanzees just so some rich guy in Europe can impress his guests.  Fisherman in Alaska shooting the Stellar sea lion because the sea lion eats the same fish he's fishing for.  The sea lion has got to eat too.  All the bycatch from fishing, all wasted.  Dragging the bottom of the ocean by trawlers killing everything in the nets path.  Why?  to make immitation crab meat for the Japanese market.  What about the buffalo in North America.  150 years ago there where millions and millions.  Now, a few  thousand in a few parks scattered.  The government actually sanctioned that one, kill the buffalo and the Native Americans will starve and we will take over the land.  We really have a lot of nerve we do.

  6. Preserving various species is a good idea. But we do have to remember that the vast majority of all species that have ever roamed the earth have become extinct. And with many of these species it's because they were too highly specialized for their own survival.

I think the Panda bear is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Pandas are beautiful creatures, but I believe they were also a biologic accident that was doomed to fail. With highly specialized diets, inefficient metabolism, and extremely long reproductive cycle, I think the Panda was doomed to extinction sooner or later.

Don't misunderstand me. I believe man should do everything we can to stay out of nature's way and help protect animals. But even with our best efforts and/or zero interference, some species are doomed to die off.

  7. reduce

    reuse

    recycle

  8. Most endangered species are in this position due to habitat destruction (encroachment, fragmentation, etc) by humans.   If we can try and protect these natural environments this would be a big step in preserving these animals.  Also, poaching is problem as well...education programs need to be put in place to stop this problem.  Laws protecteting endangered species need to be upheld and strenghtened.  Also, removing exotic species (plants and animals) from natural environments also helps restore native animals.

  9. We need to stop putting so many pollutants into the air and changing the ecosystems of the world. Polar bears in antarctica are beginning to form parts of both sexes, they are losing their food sources, and living space. We need to stop destroying forests and habitats for animals. As humans we have no idea about the ecosystem web. We go around killing species before we even know the ramifications of such. We started using DDT versus insects and what happened?... Bird species declined dramatically, including our own National Bird (Bald Eagle).  We need the endangered species list to wake people up to the fact that we are killing species and make people protect them before they are gone.

  10. It's horrible!! The red pandas have declined all the way to only 2,500 left in the world!!  We;ve been stealing their habitats, taking their food, and yet no one cares or notices how terribley this could effect us!!  Theres the circle of life, which is true.  We count on other species to survive.  For instance, the sea otter is what is called a keystone species.  Keystone species are species that are needed for several other animals to survive.  You see, without the sea otter, sea urchins would eat up much more of the seaweed because they would have no predators, and the fish who need the saweed would die out, and the fish that eat those fish would die out, and the sharks who feed on those fish would die out and so on.  Someday humans will regret killing off all of these species because we too will start declining in number because we will lose our food.  This could even affect plants if they are no longer restrained by the animals which eat them, then they could becom invasive species and take up the room of other plants, kill them, and then kill the other plants and animals who may have depended on that plant, and the cycle continues yet again.

  11. The best thing we can do is dramatically lower our population.  We are crowding out, or consuming, many species.  As a rough guess, I think two billion people could fit comfortably.

If each couple started now having only one child, we may get by without causing too much more damage before things start to improve.

  12. People are more receptive to these ideas if they are not told to do things like spend millions of dollars on a minnow, for example.
