1. We're Ukrainian Catholic, so there are LOTS of special traditions.

Before the ceremony, close family and the wedding party met at my mom's house for family to give a special blessing for the bride and groom. We knelt down, and each couple gave us a blessing.

We walked down the aisle together - very old tradition in our church. The ceremony itself we had in my hometown church, and it was all in Ukrainian. We had booklets with English so people could follow. There are special things in the ceremony, such as the crowning of the bride and groom. If anyone is interested, the service is here -

Here's a video of what the crowning is like - we used wreaths of myrtle plant (for fertility), though lots use the real crowns, and this video isn't us!

For me, the most wondrous part was at the end when all the guests sang a special song for us in Ukrainian, wishing us many happy years together. They sang it again at the reception.

We hosted about 200 people to a wonderful dinner and dance. Instead of a wedding cake on display, we had korovai, which are Ukrainian wedding breads, which are braided round loaves, decorated with symbols and flowers. There were some special Ukrainian dances through the evening. Later, a family tradition, we passed out wrapped and decorated fruitcake, for guests to put under their pillows to dream of their true love.

  2. All the women in my mom's side of the family, for their weddings, all wear the same jewlery (neckless, bracelet and earrings). It's a great tradition, and continues to be passed down to each woman that gets married within my mom's side of the family!!!
