What are some other towns around Puerto Morales, Mexico that I could stay in for about a month?

I'm a photographer and would like to do a project around this area, and am just curious if there are other towns in the area that would be interesting....

Puerto Morales is halfway between Cancun (1/2 hour drive)  to the north and Playa Del Carmen (1/2 hour drive) to the south. Either is more interesting than Puerto Morales. (People that live nearby call it Puerto Mortales - Port Death, because nothing of interest goes on there.)
