  1. QR,,Queensland Rail,,,SR,,State Rail,,,Pacific National,,Australia.

  2. Plenty! VRE is a local passenger / commuter train service between northern Virginia and Washington, DC. Virginia Railway Express. It's separate from the Metro Rail train that is a true subway style train, although here it runs both above and below ground.

Like the one guy stated, there are many classes of trains, and many local and cross-state train lines that are medium sized.

  3. amtrak is the only passenger line that travels between cities  in the US at this time.

Freight lines:  Great Northern,  Southern Pacific,  Burlington Northern/Sante Fe

There are also some some local lines for tourist and logging etc.

  4. Amtrak does all the long-haul inter-city rail.  Most large cities also have commuter rail lines, from Boston MBTA to San Diego Coaster.

Of freight-only lines, there are the Big Six:

    Union Pacific

    Burlington Northern Santa Fe

    Norfolk Southern

    CSX

    Canadian National

    Canadian Pacific

Yes, the "Canadian" roads have thousands of miles of track in the USA, due to mergers and takeovers of U.S. lines.

There are also thousands of smaller railroad companies, from the Iowa Interstate to Coe Rail.

There are also many passenger tourist railways and museums, from the Southern Michigan to the California Western.

  5. There are MANY... frieght, commuter, and light-rail..

Currently seven United States railroads are classified as Class I (operating revenue of $320 million or more): CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Railway, BNSF Railway, Union Pacific Railroad, Kansas City Southern Railway, Canadian National Railway & Canadian Pacific Railway are also considered Class I, since they have major trackage lines in the Northern United States. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Class_I_rai...

There are 18 Class II railroads, and 76 Class III railroads in the United States.

Passenger lines such as Amtrak are not classified... and despite what a previous answerer said, there ARE passenger lines other than Amtrak: CalTrain runs between Gilroy and San Francisco (77 miles) and the Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) runs from Stockton to San Jose (86) miles... also, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express is a 50 mile passenger line.

  6. Well Amtrak is a Comuter trian, in other words, it transports people. Other Comuter trains are Metro.

other than that, there is freight trains, the Best one out there is

Union Pacific! Biggest in the US. There is CSX, and BNSF. There are other railways, but very small. Some named by a state like the Conneticut central, others named by cities, like the the San Diego somthing.

         That's it I think.
