What are some places to check out in San Diego? beaches, etc?

Just looking for some suggestions from those who live there or have been there. Planning a trip in a few weeks. Is May a good time to go? What is there to do, and what are some names of places to visit? are the beaches nice? any comment appreciated.

My son and I went a few years back...we stayed in Carlsbad..it was just beautiful, we actually rented a car and drove to LA just to see the LA sights....next time I wouldve concentrated more on Seaworld and the zoo that was closer to us. But in all we had a great time and you will too.

If you go down to the gas lamp district there are a lot of bars and fun places to eat (down town San Diego).  My favorite place down town is d1cks last resort.  The waiters get paid to be mean to you and you can throw stuff.... its such a fun place.  Also fiesta island is a fun place to see at night.  Its a little island across from sea world,  were you can have fire pits and at 10pm watch the sea world fire works.  If your into amusement parks and that kind of thing, there is legoland (in Carlsbad) and knotts berry farm (in Anaheim). The beaches are amazing although they are always packed so that kinda sucks! My favorite beach is at the Oceanside pier, its like 20 minutes north of San Diego.  You can walk out on this huge pier that has a restaurant at the end, or just lay out.
