"gallo pinto" - it's a mix of beans and rice served as a side dish. You can get this in normal restaurants, and it's so popular that it's even served at Burger King in Costa Rica.

Arroz con pollo - rice with chicken was always real common and popular when I lived there.  Also, lots of fresh tropical fruits.

Gallo pinto(keep in mind it will not taste a bit like costarican food without lizano sauce!)

Arroz con pollo(rice with chicken)

Casado(rice,beans,salad and either meat or poultry usually fried and can sometimes include sweet fried plantains)

picadillo(made with different vegetables like potato and usually includes meat)

Alot of pasta,foods like lasagna,spaghetti etc are also very popular.
