  1. OOPS

I thought this was a misspelled  general question about Nature conservation

    sorry

  2. A dead and dieing forest is a sin, Log it be for it turns into dust

  3. the nature conservancy (the organization ) doesn't depend on any government or courts to do its work.

if they think an area is threatened & worth saving, they buy it at market price with private money & do what they think should be done to preserve it.

they do co operate with government agencys & comply with all laws.

if  donated land has no special conservation value they sometimes sell it & use the money to buy & protect other more threatened areas.

its pretty hard to find anything wrong with the concept.

& so far there doesnt seem to be any problem with corruption because no politicians are involved.

its much more effective than organizing protests & spending decades in court trying to get laws passed to protect threatend areas. they just buy it & do what needs to be done.

    capitalisim at its finest.

  4. TNC has contributed to some great science in the last few decades.  They have helped to identify suitable lands for acquisition and manage those lands until another agency could assume management.  But speaking from experience, the eventual land manager may not be the best suited to manage the lands in perpetuity.

I've met some fine staff associated with TNC, very dedicated people.  They are trying to redefine themselves right now, to adjust to changes in the field.  But overall, they have filled a very important niche by stepping up and securing buffer zones, links, and just plain drop-dead gorgeous habitat for permanent projection.  That's a big plus in my book.

The only group that is comparable that I can think of is the Trust for Public Lands.
