  1. Stem cells are what is used in bone marrow transplants.  They can use either bone marrow (which is stem cells in and of itself), peripheral blood stem cells (a type of white blood cell) or cord blood stem cells donated after a live healthy birth.  The medically correct name for a bone marrow transplant is actually stem cell transplant.

  2. Neurodegeneration (Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease)

    Type 1 Diabetes

Bone Marrow Transplants for treatment of blood cancers

  3. I don't know much medical applications for stem cell research. But I do know a bit on anti aging by re-activate your own stem cell in the body.

  4. I did a project last year on the use of stem cells for use in the prevention of ventricular aneurysms. After a heart attack there is a lot of dead tissue on the heart wall. This dead tissue does not perform as well as healthy tissue for propgating heart beats and the such. By using stem cells we can regrow this tissue on the surface of the heart and restore the heart to its original state.

Also stem cells could be used in the pancreas to replace the cells that cannot produce glucose and this may lead to a possible prevention of diabetes.

  5. Not sure about all the applications but I've heard in the news bone marrow replacments, cancer victims, diabieties, CF (Cistic Fibrosus) (my spelling maybe off) and even birth defects if doctors know about them early enough. Frankly the benefits outweigh the arguments against the use.
