What are some possible thesis topics in education?

An interesting thesis idea came up the other day in a discussion.  A group of teachers were at the Folger library in DC and had a chance to look at 400 year old schoolbooks.  The schoolbooks had doodles and notes in the margins, and we eventually got to talking about note taking strategies.

We all had a habit of writing notes in the margins of the pages that we read.  We all hated the idea of using something like Cornell Notes (seemed artificial).

What if you did research about whether or not students gain more from writing notes in the margins of their own texts as opposed to using note sheets in conjunction with big anthologies?
