  2. 7-8 year-olds are in a transition period.  They are coming to reality from fantasy beliefs.  Just a year or two ago, their problems would be being good so Santa will bring presents for Christmas; monsters in the closet; being in timeout when mom and dad gets mad; stuff like that.  Like any kid, third graders do face problems such as fighting, teasing in school, keeping up with school work, not talking to strangers, etc.

Basically this is the age the students start loosing their innocence as they enter their tweens years.  They become more aware of what others think about them, so they want to dress cool and wear name brand clothing.  They are more aware of the influence by TV, media and music.  Although they are now coming to terms with adult problems, they don't fully understand these problems so they may internalize them and blame themselves.  This might be divorce, drugs at home, domestic violence, death.

This is a good age to intervene as a parent to prevent future problems with your child as a teen.  School support for problem students prefers to intervene before students enter grade 4.

To deal with problems, students need to be taught ways to deal with the situation.  They generally do know right from wrong but it has to be reinforced and when faced with the real situation, they may not always make the right choice.  Adults need to explain to the child the problem and why it isn't right and what can be done about it.

  3. Parents on drugs, abuse at home, parents out of work, poverty, learning disabilities, ADHD, teachers who are too strict, teachers who are too lenient, other students who are distracting.  They pretty much face the same things everyone faces, just in varying degrees.
