Some suggestions, ask them:

What is their favorite animal?

Their favorite food/treat?

What is fun to do?

What is love?

Ask what makes them happy or sad?

First,  ask an open question like 'do you have a pet' they will say yes or no. If yes, ask a closed question like 'tell me about him', If he doesn't have a pet, say 'what kind of animal do you like best?'  Then ask why.
