  1. the thing about kindergarten interviews and iq tests and 'preparing' your kid for them is that the people doing the interviews and testing can tell when a child has been coached... so give your child some guidelines to how to do things. before my daughter had her IQ test and kindergarten reediness tests (she was tested to start school a year early), i just kind of gave her a heads up by telling her these types of things:

~they (the people interviewing) are just talking and playing some games with you to see the best way you learn.

~they do these games with lots of kids, it's not just you.

~there are no right or wrong answers, just make sure you are answering the questions and doing your best work.

~there is no doing good or bad

~when they ask you to describe something, talk a lot! (hahaha, some kids will just answer yes or no when a tester/interviewer is looking for an explanation)

some things that they might ask your child to do are copy and name shapes, write his/her name, know his/her address, etc... they probably will want to see what upper and lowercase letters he/she knows, counting objects, how high he/she can count and they might even see if he/she can read any sight words (depends on the IQ test or what kindergarten reediness test they are giving).

the key is that your child go in with confidence and just work to his/her best potential. i know some schools in new york are really exclusive, but don't let your kid know how 'important' this might be to you.

  2. Maybe to spell his name, recite the alphabet, count as high as he can, follow some simple orders (e.g. pick up the red ball and put it in the blue cup). I bet they will be really friendly to him. They may ask if he can recognize letters and his name. They may ask how old he is, what is he looking forward to at kindergarten? They will listen to his vocab level and how well he expresses himself, as well as his body language - does he sit well, does he listen well, does he understand what is being asked of him.

But be assured that they will be kind and gentle - they are not in the business of scaring children. They may even have him play a few games... It will be fine! Good luck!

  3. "who is your daddy and what does he do?"  Arnold Schwartzenager aksed that to his kidergarden class.

  4. What is your name?

    What is your favorite color?

Do you have any pets, what are there names?

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Are your parents good to you?

What would you buy with a dollar?

What is your facorite color and why?

Wht questions do you have about school?

How do you think people should treat each other?

What are you most scared of?

    How high can you count?

    Do you know your ABC's?

Can you say your ABC's Backwards?

They ask a lot of weird questions like that.

Don't worry though, it will be ok.

  5. Maybe to cut a shape out

Asked to point to certain letters and numbers

Asked to read some sight words

    Write name

Answer questions about a story  that they just read to him

    Draw a self portrait

    Color a picture

    Maybe gluing something

  6. goodness - we just have a separation trial, count to 20, identify letters in name, write name using capital and lower case letters, phone number, address.  They might recommend waiting a year if  a child is young but noone is turned away.

  7. What is the current economic status of third world countries...

  8. how much money does a nickel and two pennies make?  *shrug*

Sucks that schools in NY makes kids interview to get into kindergarten.  Weird.

  9. Interview for kindergarten? I wonder how much the tuition is for that school.

  10. an interview for K?  wow!

just make sure they know their name, can write their name, know their address; phone number, parents' name, know how to tie their shoes, button their buttons and zip up their zippers........other than that....wow, an interview!?

    Good luck!

  11. family background

    how he's treated

who teaches the kid at home

what values does the kid have

-but of course they won't ask it directly, they have a way to ask it indirectly.

just get the kid a lot of rest, and train the kid to be confident...

  12. Are they doing any testing?  If so they may administer the Gesell Developmental Observation.  If they are interviewing they may ask for name, address, and possible phone number.  Just to see how much they know.  They may ask a question like what was their favorite time etc.  Just to see how much detail they give.  They may also ask them to do things with a ball or object to check large motor skills.  Fine motor may be checked by drawing a picture or writing their name.  They also may look at a pic they drew of a person to see how complete it is.

The key I would say is read, read, read to them.  I don't think anything gets them more ready than that.   Have them write, using broke pencils, and crayons so they can get good muscle controls because sometimes those are too long for little hands.

    good luck.
