  1. It depends on where you are.

Some of the main stereotypes or 'americanisms' are: the traditional "tourist" clothes or just plain clothes in general (think hawaiian shirt and khaki shorts, but also jeans and a sweatshirt--most Europeans wouldn't wear that); believe it or not, straight, white teeth often give a person away as an American; being loud and boisterous (stereotype); being rude or asking too personal of questions; and there are others depending on where you go.

Basically, not conforming to the culture you're in will give you away as 'different' but the above are some generalizations about Americans.

  2. freedom

  3. Ketchup on fried potatoes.

References to American TV, like "being on the island".

    Drinking sodas with every meal.

American football references, (plus think soccer is boring).

Owning a gun and getting into gangsta fights.

  4. A sense of humor.  A tendency to be overly friendly and helpful.

I've traveled the world for decades and can always spot an American from the way they "move" in the world.
