  1. In Chapter III Jordan Baker says, somewhat paradoxically, "Anyhow, he [Gatsby] gives large parties...and I like large parties. They're so intimate. At small parties there isn't any privacy."

    In Chapter IV Nick refers to the parties as taking place on Gatsby's "overpopulated lawn." However, by the end Nick romanticizes them: "those gleaming, dazzling parties of his" (Chapter IX).

    In Chapter VI Daisy, strolling out :among the sparkling hundreds," whispers, "These things excite me _so._"
