Question:

What are some railroad names/company names in the U.S.?

A day or so ago I asked about how to look into railroad police jobs, and my answers directed me that they are actually run through the companies themselves (though they are full on POST cert. officers/investigators).

However the only three names I know off the top of my head to begin contacting are Burlington North/Santa Fe, Union Pacific, and AmTrak.

What are some other companies out there?

Ones that operate out of or through the midwest would be best for me right now, as would ones actively hiring, but I'm not averse to moving if the job is good, or waiting for openings later (so I'm willing to apply to rail lines in Alaska or wherever if they're hiring and pay well, and eventually any answer here would be useful if I'm patient I'm sure) so any answers are welcome and I'm sure will be helpful to me.

  1. Canadian Pacific does a lot of shipping around the midwest. There's CSX Trasnportation, Grand Trunk Corporation, Kansas City Southern, Norfolk Southern, Canadian National.

  2. Soo, Great Northern, Grand Trunk, Monon, Southern, Frisco, Chicago $ Great Western, Rock Island, Pennsylvania, New York Central, Wisconsin Central, Texas & Pacific, Santa Fe, Northern Pacific, Central of Georgia, MKT, Kansas City Southern, Illinois Central, Southern Pacific, Chicago Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific, Maine Central, Reading, just to name a few.

  3. Check out www.rrb.gov. This sight is with the Railroad Retirement Board but also carries an area that lists several carriers and their web sights where you would be able to find out if there were any job openings.

    Good Luck.

  4. Carlos,

Do the below links help?  Along with the Class Is, of course (CSX, UP, BNSF, Kansas City Southern, Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, and Norfolk Southern) you might want to look into their smaller counterparts, Regionals (or Class IIs).  Although they are not as large as Class Is, I believe that some Regionals also hire their own police but you would just need to check with each individual company.  The best of luck to you!

  5. DM&E, UP, BNSF,and  CP

These are just a few that I know of. Hope this helps.

  6. you should probably not go for the Rock Island, Soo, or any others that are not in business anymore. (this would include DM&E considering it either just got bought out by CP or is going to be bought out by them very soon)

AAR should have the information about all of the active railroads in the country.
