  3. I agree with Markh above.  The main usage that I've seen is in circuits and electricity.  There are also cool things called fractals that were created by generating imaginary numbers.  It's also related to chaos theory which was popularized by "Jurassic Park".

  4. In Electrical Engineering you deal with Alternating Current(AC)

    The Phase angle of the current is expressed in imaginary numbers. a capacitor makes negative imaginary numbers and an inductor makes positive imaginary numbers.and a good engineer tries to make the circuit so that in the end the imaginary numbers cancel each other out.

    Also power companies is the Phase angle(repented as imaginary numbers) to determine how much power people are using.

When the complex number is purely imaginary, such as a real part of 0 and an imaginary part of 120, it means the voltage has an amplitude of 120 volts and a phase of 90°, which is physically very real.
