My friend is 20. He is blind in his left eye. Slighty mentally retarded ( he acts like a 15 year old). Could he recive a disiblilty check every month? Also, is there anything he could do to get the government to help him pay for housing because of this?

  1. My little brother has severe autism. He's 22 almost, and has finally been able to receive support.

Honestly from your description, it's hard to tell if your friend would qualify. Here's a link to help you better understand the requirements and processes.

    Hope that helps:)

  2. He needs  to go to City Hall to check out the housing situation in the city area. Every state has different plans for apartments and or so called subsidized housing. It depends on the state and the area you live in. Why did his parents not tend to this a long time ago?

  3. I am blind in one eye-that shouldn't make a difference-

He may be able to get some assistance such as supplemental security income (SSDI) but shoudln't qualify for full disability-he may qualify fro public assistance such as food stamps

He should contact the division of developmental disabilities-they will assign him a case worker to help with finding a job, housing

he is also eligible for vocational rehab services

  4. There are many different kinds of disabilities, including physical, mental and emotional.

Beyond the vision handicap, your friend sounds as if he may be developmentally disabled, which might qualify him for SSI (Social Security Income), which is an adult version of welfare – which might also assist him with medical benefits, or housing assistance.  However, if it is determined in any way that he is able to hold a job - he will not qualify.  If he has an employment history, but his condition has worsened over time, which interferes with obtaining employment - he may qualify for the other form of disability, which is based upon the income that he had.  If he has no immediate family or advocates that would assist him through the application process, perhaps he may benefit from the services of a disability attorney, who would do what they could to help him get assistance.  Of course, this would result in attorney's fees – which would come out of his benefits package IF, and once approved.  If his case is marginal (and almost everyone is denied at first), it could take up to three years to be approved.  But the application date becomes the beginning date of any benefits to be received … so that is a help.  It's nice that he has good friends.  Good luck.

  5. go to the social security office and ask for info on ssi..he may be able to collect if the doc says he is disabled . I don't know about the housing assistance.
