  1. The fastest ever run by a steam locomotive. 126mph by the LNER class A4 'Mallard' in the 1930s. It has never been beaten. Fastest point to point schedule by a regular train service 'The Cheltenham Flyer' from London Paddington to Cheltenham, this during the 1950s. Longest non-stop service, The Flying Scotsman, London King's Cross to Edinburgh, Special tenders with a corridor linking to the coaches were built in order that there could be a crew change en route without the train having to stop. First passenger railway in the world, the Stockton to Darlingtom Railway, 1825. First death of a person killed by a train, William Huskisson MP who stepped in front of a train on the opening day of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830. First underground or metro service, The Metropolitan Railway in London from Paddington to Farringdon

  2. Can't beat the previous answer except to add that the Deltic Co-Co of 1955 was the most powerful Diesel-electric in the world at the time.

The Beyer-Garratts were the best articulated steam locos in the world, no railway that had Mallets and took on a Garrett ever went back to Mallets. Also the first to crack 100mph with steam, "Flying Scotsman" was it not?

Another was that the non-streamlined steam locos of Britain had the least ancillary bits and pieces bolted to the running boards and boiler sides.  They were a lot more elegant.  Compare French, German or any US steam loco with a British one of the same era and you will see what I mean.
